Cactus vs. Eddie

When I get a little free time I go to my closet to clean it out. Sometimes, I come across a book or videotape that I hadn't watched in ages. Sometimes, it blows my mind how I forgot about it when I was so "into it" at the time. Today,I unearthed a videotape that contained a number of the classic Eddie Gilbert vs. Cactus Jack matches from 1991. These matches were all the rage of the indie scene in those days. Wrestling was pretty stale in 1991 as WCW and the WWF were presenting the same old stuff year after year. The indie scene in the northeast was always were the true hardcore wrestling was found and that is why this particular feud was so popular.

I haven't had the chance to watch much of the tape, but from what I have watched it was obvious Cactus/Foley was going to be a star. The crowd was really into him and he could brawl very well. Eddie, of course, was an amazingly underrated talent who we all miss.

The Incredible Hulk Film

Even though I am a huge Hulk fan, I didn't get around to checking out the Incredible Hulk film until yesterday. Well, the wait was truly worth it because this was an outstanding comic book hero film. After seeing the Iron Man film, I didn't think there would be two quality superhero films back to back. Yet, that is exactly what we get with a tremendous film in the form of the Incredible Hulk. This is a solid film that mixes the heart of the comic book with enough of a serious edge that the narrative remains compelling. Unfortunately, the box office was not on the level of Iron Man, but $220+ million at the box office is hardly something to sneer at. Hopefully, it will do a ton of money on DVD and we'll see another sequel in the future....well, at least we can hope for it...

Bell to Bell Vol 1

I always had a "love/hate relationship" with wrestling shoot interviews. When I first saw Looking for Mr. Gilbert, I was blown away at the uniqueness of seeing a wrestler talk openly and honestly about the wrestling business. In time, many more videos followed and now it has been about 14 years since shoots first debuted. And, they got pretty boring…fast.

Then, along comes a DVD that is really impressive such as Bell to Bell Vol 1 which features a round table discussion that includes Bushwhacker Luke and Al Snow where they discuss tag team wrestling for one hour and then they discuss what makes a great heel for an hour.

To put it mildly, this is a fantastic DVD mainly because Snow and Luke do not treat their audience as dumb or illiterate. They provide honest and insightful commentary about the wrestling business that you won't find anywhere else. Clearly, they have a love for the game and a deep philosophical understanding of it. This is what makes Bell to Bell Vol 1 such a must have DVD.

I have picked up a number of fantastic books on WWII, the Civil War and the forging of the nation for very little money. Often, we forget to study our American history after we leave school. This is unfortunate because there is ALWAYS something interesting to learn reading up on American history. Going High Tech

I am going high tech with this blog. Well, not really. Well, sort of. Ok, let me explain. One of the reasons why I have not been as prolific as I was a year ago is simple due to an increased work schedule. It just becomes tough to put my notes into these blog entries at times. However, I have found a possible solution to my problems.

I picked up some voice operated software and I am using to dictate raw versions of blog entries. I am hoping that it will aid in allowing me to increase my productivity so that I can go back to making multiple entries during the week. No, the software is not perfect and it takes a while to get used to. Hopefully, I will get the hang of it and start writing more often.

And, by the way, I did not use the voice operated software to create this blog entry...

More on Comic Book Heroes

Of the goal of this particular blog is not to psychoanalyze anyone with myself included. (But I am aure the writing might be of interest to academics, psychologists et al) however, I will ask that do provide a little introspection into your own reading habits. In one of my previous posts and mentioned how comic books and superheroes are popular because people identify with the heroes. The then, there are those heroes that simply have a difficult time maintaining their popularity due to a lack of a identification. This is the quadary Superman finds himself. Superman is often to idealized and near perfect. This is why many people consider him quaint but never become regular readers of this book.

Yes, I know, that the character has long since been refined and made interesting. But sales of his book have always been inconsistent and he is far, far from a money making character in terms of comic book sales...particularly for such a long standing iconic character.

The next time you purchase a comic book, a really look at the book your buying. Look at the character and then look inward. What is it about a particular character that makes you want to buy the character's book. It you take this introspective approach you just might learn a little bit about yourself that was previously elusive.

Thoughts on Comic Books

One interesting question we need asked is why there is such an obsession with superheroes. Are OK, some may wonder why I use the word obsession as opposed to interest. When you look closely at the fan base for comic books you'll notice they truly rabid an obsessive lot. Now, that is not a knock on anyone who enjoys these books. Plus, obsessions bar hardly unique to comic book fandom. For sample, the world of sports is loaded with people who obsess over their heroes as well. But the psychology employed by the fans of the comic books is somewhat different and unique. There there is a certain motivation that readers of comic books utilize when they make their purchases. On the surface, the people purchase comic books in order to be entertained. This is a given. However, there is a deeper meaning found in the purchase of a comic book. Yes, there is the notion of the eternal struggle of good vs. evil. That we are all quite aware of but, once again, the motivation goes deeper than this.

Much of the motivation centers on transferring oneself from the real world to a character whom we identify with. Would Spiderman have ever been as popular a character as he had become a few is not anchored to the nebbish Peter Parker? Know know, he would have never been as popular in a million years. The the reason for this is that the disaffected youth of multiple generations identify with the various problems that Peter faced.

Ring of Hell - Chris Benoit Book

Anyone who reads this blog knows I am a huge fan of wrestling related books. I had written a number of reviews on this site over the past couple years but have not added a new review in 6 or so months. That's because I haven't picked up any books. Yesterday, I plunked down $28 for the book RING OF HELL: THE TRUE STORY OF CHRIS BENOIT AND THE FALL OF PROFESSIONAL WRESTLING by Matthew Randozzo.

Yes, I read the whole book in one sitting. And yes, it is a controversial book. And, yes, the hype is true - this is a really compelling narrative. There are some serious allegations in the book and if half of what is in the book is actually true...then the wrestling business is an even more bizarre subculture than we thought.

The Flair - Morton Cage Match

Let's give WWE 24/7 some major thanks for airing the raw footage (no commentary) archival video of the 1986 Ric Flair/Ricky Morton Cage match. Simply put, this is a fantastic 5 star match.

The Flair-Morton feud was one of the cooler feuds of the 1980's NWA. Granted, it was not a feud that did the box office because Morton was pegged as a tag team wrestler. No matter how great their matches were most fans did not believe Morton would win the title. For example, in the hard core wrestling city of Philadelphia the average attendance was 8,000 fans with the occasional 12,000 seat sell out (the two sell outs that come immediately to mind are Dusty/Road Warriors vs. Flair/Andersons and the first Philly Flair vs. Luger match) The Philly bout between Flair and Morton only drew 5,000 and was a major attendance disappointment.

The Flair-Morton Cage match during the Great American Bash, however, did sell A LOT of tickets and deservedly so. This was a five star match that truly stands the test of time and is old school wrestling at its finest.
